Hi all/anyone with some advice. I have been the parent with care for over 12 years my two sons now grown up 23724 still live at home as do my two other children 41/2 and 12 years old. Out of the blue earlier this week I had a letter from the CSA chasing arrears, always disputed, but on my file from the short time I was not the parent with care. They are insistent that I pay this money, nearly 5K, within a week or they will apply for ant attachment of earnings order. I cant do the former and the latter will financially cripple me, any advice please

I'll see if the CMO are able to give any general advice, as they can't comment on specific cases. Unfortunately, if you are in arrears (in the CSA's eye) then it's difficult to avoid the possible consequences.

The CSA is allowed by law to make deductions in respect of child maintenance directly from the earnings of parent who pays child maintenance. This is done either where the parent has chosen to pay by this method, or in some cases, because the parent has failed to pay the amount required voluntarily. The maximum the CSA can deduct is 40% of your earnings.

This said you mentioned that the arrears are in dispute, you may wish to seek legal advice regarding this. The best people to speak to are Community Legal Advice. Their helpline number is 0845 345 4345. It may also be useful to give Citizens Advice a call.

I’m sorry but we can't look into individual cases here. If you would like to contact the CSA then I am sure they will be happy to look into your case. You can find contact details on any letter the CSA have sent to you. Or, you can find the right number here: https://www2.dwp.gov.uk/csa/v2/en/contact/index.asp.
