hi all

In June 2013 i went off on carers leave from the department of work and pensions , my mother was not well and needed round the clock help so i stood up for duty to help her , i am still off on carers leave i have no money or income , i live off handouts from my siblings to pay bills and eat , and obviously im not obliged to pay CSA.

before my carers leave i happily paid £170 a month for years and years no problem ,but now the csa are saying i owe them arrears from June 2013 to now because i didn't inform them about the change in circumstance.

They have called me and confirmed i haven't been paid since last June 2013 but still want arrears , how can they do this to me when its in plain black and white that i didn't earn a penny from June 2013 and how the [censored] do i pay them im broke and they've sent me a very threatening letter , they are so aggressive i don't know what to do.

surely im not liable to pay all these arrears when i haven't made a dime in that period 🙁

Oh dear that's not good, your right if they have confirmed your wasn't working, then no arrears are due, you've probably just spoken to one of the many workers there who don't know the rules

I would lodge a complaint, write to the Complaints resolution manager at the address your case is held at and just do a brief run down including your case number of what's happened, with dates you started claiming carers etc and what you've been told on the phone

Always take names and make a note of dates and times of phone calls when dealing with the CSA too

Thanks huxley
I shall give that a whirl I'll try speaking to another agent and if they say I still owe them the money then I will have to complain

Is that correct Huxley? If adam didn't inform the CSA that he'd left work, doesn't the liability run until they are informed, even if they subsequently find out that he wasn't working since June?

Sorry I missed that bit when I read it the first time (that he hadn't informed them)

Hmmm sticky ground, depends on if the case worker is having a good day , a good one would see there was no income and therefore no arrears

Not come across this situation before

I think you could try and blag it and say you did ring them to inform them  but I'm sure they lodge all calls on the computer system

..or could tell them you informed them by letter - that could have been lost very easily.
