Cms denying overpayment

Looking for some advice. I have a 19 year old child who left education in June. After calling the child maintenance to report this on the 1st of September I was told I had to call child benefit and report it as they hadn’t received any change in circumstances. I called child benefit and after 9 weeks of calling back and forth for updates i was told they had confirmed my child was not in education and once the case was updated I would receive a letter confirming how much I was due back in overpayment. My child maintenance gets taken directly from my wage ( my child’s mother wanted it this way) so have proof of everything being taken out! I have spoken to them today to be told I was not entitled to anything and in fact owe them 35 pound ? I was not in arrears never missed a payment and was told repeatedly that I was due back any money that was paid after September the 1st they now owe me over 1000 pound and are just trying to pass the blame in all directions is there any advice on what to do in this situation.
