Hi dads after some advise, just had my child maintenance re looked at to keep things simple I get 1800 a month before tax contracted hours child maintenance comes in at £398.84 that’s nearly 1/4 of my earning, there basing it on last year where I did lots of overtime but this year there isn’t much iv rang csa and had a horrrible woman and basically said suck it up if I dont pay it balifs will be round. Is there any way I can contest it thanks in advance
Unfortunately, aside from the usual appeals/complaints procedure there isn’t another way of contesting it.
If they’ve looked at it again and the difference between your earnings this year to last isn't more/less than 25%, I don’t think there’s anything you can do... you could ask your MP to help.

I think you are stuck for a while unfortunately. I am guessing you have been caught out by earning 25% more than the previous year which has triggered a retrospective variation.
I had similar where I received a bigger than normal annual bonus, CMS re-awarded, but at that same time company gave a profits warning for the coming year and overtime and bonus stopped. I ended up paying CMS on an extra 20K that I was not going to earn in the coming year and I could do nothing about it.
Only thing I can say is that if your earnings this year end up being 25% less than last year then you will benefit as it will also be retrospectively varied downwards at end of year.
Or, even if you have 3 pay slips in a row with it 25% less that I think would trigger a re-assessment. I suggest you do not go for that option and then end up earning more than the 25% differential, as you will get reassessed again upwards at the end of the year.
I had a similar experience this year when changing jobs.
I moved to a job that paid less than previous- but not quite the silly 25% threshold. It was close - about 24% which is a big difference- but not a big enough difference to trigger a change
On way I remedied that- that was to increase my pension contribution to take me above the 25 percent.

have you lot considered self-employed/contractor work? would make your life a lot easier believe me.
I have thort about this is it any better as I’m a electrician but work for a company I do have a option Togo self employed and I have considered it
yes definitely worth it. as in self-employed work, your accountant works out your income and how much tax to pay. theres a lot more flexibility and its legal too. when CMS asked me about my income, I said I will need to contact my accountant and get income figure from them. and i just passed it over.
Increasing your pension contributions is a good way to stabilise your P60 earnings.
Bonus and other payments can be put into pension via an AVC.
