[Solved] Child Maintenance

My son turns 18 in June, and he may stay on at college another year.
I am wondering if I keep up my maintenance payments until he is 19 or do i stop payments this year?
There are many conflicting opinions out there!!

Thankyou. Lee

Hi

As of December last year, the age has now increased to 20. If he is in full time non-advanced education (ie, not university) then child benefit will be paid to your ex, and that means you are still liable for maintenance.

Hi Leed3198

Thank you for your post, I'm William the Child Maintenance Options consultant. If you have a family-based arrangement in place you may wish to discuss and negotiate with the other parent when your payments will stop. However, if you'd like to follow the guidlines set by the Child Support Agency's (CSA), they say that child maintenance must be paid by the paying parent to the receiving parent until the child turns 16 or until they reach 20 if they are in full-time education (not higher than A-level equivalent) or for as long as Child Benefit is being paid. To clarify you may wish to speak to the CSA directly, you can find contact details on https://www.gov.uk/child-support-agency.

There is a new web application, sorting out separation. It aims to make it much easier for separating and separated parents (and childless couples) to find the support they need, when and where they need it, and encourages them to collaborate on a range of issues. The link is www.dad.info/divorce-and-separation/sorting-out-separation.

For more details on the different options available for child maintenance, you can visit www.cmoptions.org or ring Child Maintenance Options on 0800 988 0988.

William
