Hi steveng43,

I have moved your thread to this board as it seemed the more logical place for it to be. I have also asked Child Maintenance Options to pop by and answer your query.

Thanks

Hi,

My name's Sarah and I'm the Child Maintenance Options consultant. Under child support legislation, regular child maintenance payments must be made until a child is 16 years old, or 19 if they are in full-time education (A-level or equivalent), or for as long as Child Benefit is being paid.

If you and the other parent have reached a family-based agreement, then you can decide between yourselves if the amount you pay drops slightly when your oldest child reaches the age of 14. However, should maintenance payments be via the Child Support Agency. The amount you're legally required to pay is calculated on your net income. Should you have a change in circumstances you'd need to contact the Child Support Agency straight away.

If a Consent Order is in place and you need some information about where you stand legally, it might be worth contacting Community Legal Advice. Their helpline number is 0845 345 4345.

For more information about child maintenance and access to useful tools and forms online you can visit www.cmoptions.org, or if you'd prefer a confidential chat you could call the Child Maintenance Options team on 0800 988 0988 (free from a landline).

Thanks
Sarah
