Hi Tommy.
Thank you for your post. I am William the Child Maintenance Options consultant.
Child Benefit is usually paid to the parent with the main day to day care of the child.
Child maintenance is a contribution towards the cost of bringing up your child and this includes not only such items as food and clothing but also it is a contribution towards the home that your child lives in and the associated costs of running that home.
Any child maintenance that you pay will go directly to your child's mother. In the past if your child's mother, was receiving Income Support, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance or Employment and Support Allowance and in receipt of child maintenance, her benefits would have been reduced accordingly. However, on the 12 April 2010 the law on child maintenance changed. This change means that your child's mother can now keep all of the child maintenance she receives and it will not affect her benefits. In addition, receiving maintenance does not affect Council Tax Benefit, Housing Benefit or tax credits regardless of the amount. Any child maintenance received should still be declared to Jobcentre Plus, even though it should not affect the benefits she receives.
