[Solved] Child Benefit. How do I get it stopped?

Hi,
My son has recently left school and now studying an HNC at college. Both CMS website and Child benefit website state that payments should stop if he is studying this course. I phoned the CMS and they initially told me that my ex had agreed with this and that my payments would alter (still paying for my daughter). But then after not hearing anything from them for over a month I phoned them and got told that as my ex was still in receipt of child benefit that my payments had to stay the same. When I queried that the child benefit should not be being paid their only solution was to report this as a fraud. Even if I do this I do not get told of the outcome of any investigation (and I'd be surprised if there is one even conducted!) so how do I get a resolution to this.... I need the child benefit payments to stop in order to get the CMS payments to stop but neither agency talks to each other and seem totally unwilling to help me. My ex never spends a penny on the kids and I want to try and help my boy out by giving him the money directly... Hugely frustrating and any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi there

Unfortunately the rules on confidentiality mean that information can't be shared with you, which is extremely frustrating.

Could you contact the mother and tell her that unless she contacts the CB and CSA agencies to report the change to her entitlement, you will make a formal complaint and report her for fraud. Explain that you will continue to support your son directly....she might then do the right thing.

You could also try talking to your MP about the difficulties your having getting action on the fact that you shouldn't be paying, they may be able to encourage the two agencies to act on the information.

All the best.
