Good evening
My son is 3 months old, born in South Africa. I am a permanent resident in the UK, as I'm still paying maintenance for my daughter, from a previous relationship.
I sent CMS the birth certificate, along with other doctors letters from SA but they ignored this. CMS confirmed, the birth needs to be registered here in the UK first, then I need to apply for child maintenance, once they have record of this, my current payments will be adjusted. I
'm struggling to make the payments of £314 every month for my daughter. I've approached citizens advice but advised to go back to CMS and appeal the decision. I'm not sure what to do at this stage but I'm struggling and feeling stressed.
Any advice/ guidance would be much appreciated.
hi,
you should try to get your son registered for child benefit as soon as possible. Then you send this paperwork to CMS and they will take it into account.
does your daughter stay overnights at your place? if so have CMS taken this into account?
Apart from your son, there are other expense claims you can possibly make if they apply to you:
-
- Regular contact: The cost of keeping in regular contact with the child, such as fuel for travel
- Support for children with disabilities or long-term illnesses: The cost of supporting children who live with you if they have a disability or long-term illness
- Repaying debts: Repaying debts from a previous relationship, such as a car loan
- Boarding school fees: The everyday living costs or "boarding" part of boarding school fees
- Home payments: Mortgage, loan, or insurance payments for the home you and the receiving parent used to share
I recommend you join this support group for paying parents:
Hi
I don't have contact with my daughter, she's 17 now and lives with her mom and step dad I've tried over the years but I've made peace with it. Hopefully one day when she's older, she'll reach out to me without any influence from her mom.
With child benefit, it's the same thing, to qualify, my son needs to be registered first.
