[Solved] At financial breaking point

My ex wife and I had an agreement on how much I would pay her each month for our two children. This was an agreement that worked for five years.

Someone advised her to go to the child maintenance service and my payments over doubled overnight. Before this happened I remarried and have another beautiful daughter with my new wife.

The problem I have is now these payments are coming out each month I am struggling financially to the point that last night my debit and credit cards were both declined.

I don't know what to do now as my current wife is telling me I need to quit my job which is not an option for me. The whole situation is causing endless arguments always ending in tears.

My two kids from my previous marriage are both teenagers and never want to spend time with there dad or sister as they are too busy with their friends. My ex has a new boyfriend living with her and probably now have a good lifestyle whilst i'm struggling to put food on our table.

I don't know what to do?

Hi

I'm afraid that you are liable to pay maintenance at the rate the CMS state, if a case has been opened with them. There should be a slight reduction because you have a daughter you are responsible for, but otherwise, your ex's income or lifestyle, and equally the fact that your sons don't have contact with also has no bearing on maintenance.

I would advice that you contact stepchange - www.stepchange.org - they are a debt management charity, and the sooner you can sort out a solution, the easier it will be in the long run.

Hi,

Correct me if I'm wrong but if you are not together with your new wife, your maintenance payments would be split more evenly between all three children. Of course I'm not saying you should break up or break the law. But it's something to think about.
