Hi all
My son has started a plumbing apprenticeship working 4 days a week and attending college 1 day a week. He’s earning £780 a month from it and turns 18 in March this year. Do I still have to pay maintenance? I have no idea if his mum is still receiving child benefit.
Any advice would be appreciated
To the best of my knowledge, a paid apprenticeship is not classed as education, and I also believe that maintenance only continues if he is in at least 12 hours per week education, so I'd say you don't have to pay. Are you paying via CMS at the moment, or via a private arrangement?
It might be worth giving Child Maintenance Options a call to see if they can clarify.
Hi
I’m paying via a private arrangement . I’ll give them a call. Thanks for your input
Since it's by private arrangement, I'd be inclined to write to her saying you are going to stop child maintenance as you believe that it's no longer due, and then see what she says. I'd have a word with child maintenance options anyway.
Thank you
