What do I do with sound sensitive kid?

my daughter is 2 years 6 month old and she has developed a fear of honking vehicles and harsh sounds like that of a crow. She keeps crying when we take her outside on the road just for a walk. I am very tensed with this situation.

I'd mention this to your GP to get her hearing checked.

Hello dustin8912,

May I suggest that if you can, you purchase some noise cancelling headphones for her to wear? I am thinking of situations that you maybe in where being in loud noise is unavoidable, like a train station, a busy city or town centre where there is lots of traffic and unpredictable movement. I remember as a child myself in the 70's being very afraid of sirens and motorbikes. The fact that the sound just comes up on you can be very frightening. Try to reassure your daughter, either through a firm hug - which will make her feel safe, or make sure she has a favourite cuddly toy to take with her whenever you go outdoors. Praise her for the times she gets through noises she finds difficult, and hopefully overtime she will come to know that these noises are perfectly normal and part of everyday life.

For your peace of mind you could go and see her GP and request an ear examination, to double check that all is ok.

Many families have found noise cancelling headphones to be of real use in certain situations.

Wishing you all the best,

Fegans Parent Support Volunteer.
