My son has no ambition to pass his GCSE to get an apprenticeship. He's currently on his second year at college doing a course, he's told me he is working cash in hand and has missed several days of college to work cash in hand. I predict he will continue at college next year doing the same
All the while I am paying maintenance. Surely this isn't right?
hi,
this would depend on status of child benefit. if child benefit considers him to be in full time education, then you would be expected to continue paying maintenance. as he earns cash in hand, then will be very difficult to prove he is employed.
Hi
On the issue of his GCSE's... you may well have covered this with your son; if he can leave college with some GCSEs then this definitely improves his chances of progressing onto apprenticeships. He can leave school without any GCSEs and then go onto doing Level 2 intermediate (GCSE level) apprenticeship, but the options can be much more limited at this level. Sometimes schools and colleges run vocational courses.
It is probably worth talking to the careers dept in your son's college, if your son is not keen to join in that conversation maybe do that on your own and you can pass on the information or they can then talk to him at school about what his options are.
