New Downton chopper tour: a snip at £2,500 per hour

Lords and Ladies might have to remortgage their country piles to afford this iconic heli-tour

With the UK’s most popular period drama now in it’s sixth and final season, The London Helicopter has today launched a way for cashed-up telly addicts to see the series off in considerable style, with an exclusive helicopter tour of the iconic Downton Abbey set, flying direct from central London.

Before December 2015, fans of the historic series can depart the hub-bub of London for the more genteel locale of Downton Abbey in Yorkshire, otherwise known as Highclere Castle in nearby West Berkshire.

Thoroughly modern guests will feel like Lord and Lady Grantham, it says here, as they inspect the extensive estate before soaring over the instantly recognisable main house.

Passengers will – apparently – sense the hustle and bustle of Carson, Mrs Hughes and Mrs Patmore below stairs and imagine the Dowager Countess and her long term sparring partner, Isobel Crawley, arriving for supper in one of the Abbey’s numerous vintage automobiles. Guests can channel the glitz of Ladies Mary and Edith and their love of 1920’s finery, and although there is no dress code for flights with The London Helicopter, costumes are welcome. (I’ll be flying with five french maids in that case.)

But the glamour doesn’t stop there. After flying over beautiful English countryside, the return to Battersea in London will include a birds-eye tour of some of London’s most exciting and iconic sights including Hyde Park, Buckingham Palace, The Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, The London Eye, Shakespeare’s Globe, the famous bridges over River Thames, London’s financial district, Tower Bridge, The Tower of London, The Shard and so much more.

How much will this hour-long flight cost you? Well, as the headline has already told you, the price for experiencing ‘Downton Abbey’ from the air on The London Helicopter is a mere £2,500, providing exclusive hire of the helicopter for up to six passengers. So that’s just £416.66 each. Bargain – I’ll just tell my butler to fetch my coin purse.
